Some character design notes for the wicked witch herself... Wilbur! When designing characters, I will more often-than-not write down tips and guidelines to myself as a way of cementing character design language knowledge into how I draw them. In Wilbur's case, I made a point to bring up the very defensive, closed-off squares and aggressive triangles, all bundled up with a cute, oversized hoodie, hat and cape. Don't forget to round out the edges of her face and hands. Her softness is subtle like her kindness, don't make it obvious!
For these sketches, I wanted to practice with some angles, expressions and some very bare shading! Wilbur is supposed to be over hundreds of years old whilst having the height and body of a child, so whilst her face and proportions say "small child", her expressions and words (mostly) convey a completely different story. I also wanted to use this opportunity to practice drawing her without her adorably stupid-big hat. God I love that hat, but I love her big, dumb cowlick even more. I want people to go "Oh..!" when they see it when her hat gets blown away or something.
